“Salt Marsh Scientists” is a comprehensive, five-module, inquiry-based program that explores the biology, ecology, and restoration of coastal wetlands. By focusing on the critical role of salt marsh grasses in protecting coastlines, improving water quality, supporting biodiversity, and storing carbon from the atmosphere, the curriculum helps students understand the broader environmental significance of these habitats. Importantly, it provides educators—even those in inland or non-coastal regions—with the tools to teach students about salt marshes and their vital role in climate resilience and ecosystem health. Through this program, students everywhere will gain a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the importance of protecting natural habitats, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship regardless of geographic location. Aligned with NGSS standards (HS-LS2), the curriculum uses the 5E instructional model to move students from learning the basics of how plants survive to solving big real-world environmental problems.
