About this Webinar
Attending conferences is more than just presenting research and having a few drinks. Why is attending a conference important and how can a beginner maximize conference participation for personal and professional growth? In this webinar, two eminent speakers in academia will provide answers to these questions (and more). They will offer useful tips to help inexperienced conference-goers maximize conference participation. If you are planning to attend a conference soon, or you have relevant questions, plan to attend this webinar.
Hosted by the 2024 Plantae Fellows.
SPEAKERS
Sjon Hartman
Sjon Hartman is a Junior Professor of Plant Environmental Signalling & Development at the Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies and University of Freiburg, Germany. His lab was established at the start of 2022. The main focus of his lab is understanding how plants sense, respond and acclimate to flooding stress. Sjon performed his BSc, MSc and PhD studies at Utrecht University (NL) and moved to Freiburg after a brief postdoc at the Gibbs lab in Birmingham (UK). In his free time, he enjoys good food, hikes in the black forest and tending to his reef aquarium. You can find him on X: @SjonHartman
Anna Matuszynska
Matuszynska is a Junior Professor in Computational Life Science at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. She received her engineering and master’s degree in mathematics from the Gdansk University of Technology in Poland and earned a second master’s degree in drug discovery from Aberdeen University in Scotland. In 2016, Matuszynska completed her doctoral degree in computational biology from Heinrich Heine University, Dusseldorf, Germany. Her group is developing mechanistic, computational models of plant primary and secondary metabolism, with a particular focus on photosynthesis and light regulation in the context of agriculture limitations, plant bioenergetics and organisms interactions. You can find her on X: @AnnaMatuszynska
MODERATORS
Abdulkabir Omeiza Abdulmalik
Abdulkabir is a graduate student at CEPLAS Graduate School, Germany, and a 2024 Plantae Editor. His research focuses on using an experimental evolution approach to assemble plant growth-promoting soil microbiomes. He is passionate about science communication and sustainable crop production. In his free time, he loves playing soccer and enjoying nature views. You can find him on X: @Omeiza_PlantDoc.
Marvin Jin
Marvin is a PhD student in the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University. Curious about plant developmental biology, his research focuses on identifying putative gene targets regulating root angle growth in hopes of engineering better crop root systems for future climates and environments. You can find him on X: @MarvinJYS.
Amarachi Ezeoke
Amarachi, a Nigerian researcher, earned her master’s degree from Leibniz Universität Hannover in Germany and is pursuing a PhD at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. She has received recognition through scholarships like the Carlo Schmid Scholarship, Arnold Smith Scholarship, DAAD Scholarship and others. Amarachi is deeply committed to science communication and policy, advocating for quality education and sustainable environments. She finds joy in sharing her expertise and insights with diverse audiences. You can find her on X: @_kwindalyn_.
