Brief bio:

My academic life started with studying appraisal of genetics behind micronutrients (Fe and Zn) in wheat at Dr. Umar Masood Quraishi’s lab (Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan). After that, I did my PhD with Prof. Zhonghu He and Dr. Yonggui Xiao at Institute of Crop Sciences, CAAS/CIMMYT China office. My PhD research was focused on validation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based high throughput phenotyping/remote sensing for early detection of important wheat attributes (NDVI, chlorophyll level, green biomass, and canopy height) to predict physiological changes, abiotic stress, grain yield and its application for quantitative genetic analysis in wheat. During this period, I have also worked with Dr. Awais Rasheed on functional marker development in wheat breeding. Afterwards I joined postdoctoral position in Prof. Zhonghu He’s lab to continue my research on UAV based multispectral imaging for quantification of senescence, identification of QTL linked with senescence and KASP (Kempetitive allele-specific primer) marker development in wheat. These findings gave rise to use UAV based remote sensing as digital breeding tool with high accuracy to identify novel alleles for times series changes in wheat physiology and its impact on yield.

I hope that continuous studies on high throughput phenomics using recent advances in sensors and robotics could help to close genome to phenome knowledge gap in crop breeding. (Twitter: @ adeelhassan505)
