Recognizing Plant Physiology authors: Huajin Sheng

Huajin Sheng, first author of YSL3-mediated copper distribution is required for fertility, seed size and protein accumulation in Brachypodium

Current Position: Postdoctoral researcher, Global Institute for Food Security, University of Saskatchewan, Canada

Education: Ph.D. in Botany, Triticeae Research Institute, Sichuan Agricultural University, Chengdu, China

Non-scientific Interests: music, fishing

Brief bio: I joined Dr. Yonghong Zhou’s group at Sichuan Agricultural University in 2012 to start my Master and PhD. program and work on plant heavy metal stress. Sponsored by China Scholarship Council, I joined Dr. Olena Vatamaniuk’s lab at Cornell University as a visiting PhD student to obtain training in molecular biology, from 2015 to 2018. In Dr. Olena Vatamaniuk’s lab, I got the chance to learn and utilize multidisciplinary approaches including RNA-seq, CRISPR/CAS9-mediated genome editing and synchrotron x-ray fluorescence imaging tools to identify and characterize genes responsible for Cu absorption in root and delivery to reproductive organs, and elucidated the mechanism underlying how Cu affects fertility and grain yield in Arabidopsis, Brachypodium and wheat. Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher supervised by Dr. Leon Kochian and Dr. Raju Datla from Global Institute for Food Security at University of Saskatchewan, working on exploring TOR Signaling pathway involved in water use efficiency and mineral nutrient homeostasis.
