Chuanmei Zhu, first author of “Pleiotropic and Non-redundant Effects of an Auxin Importer in Setaria and Maize”

Current Position: Plant Reproductive Biology Scientist at Bayer Crop Science

Education: PhD at Washington University in St. Louis; BS in Tsinghua University, China

Non-scientific Interests: Spend time with family (family movie night, hiking, traveling, and camping, etc), run, quiet time

Brief bio:

I was raised in a farmer’s family and have had a passion for developing better seeds/crops for farmers since I was young. Currently, I am working as a Plant Reproductive Biology Scientist, part of the Seed Production Innovation team at Bayer Crop Science. We are leading the innovation and development and plant reproductivity-based initiatives that drive Seed Production Innovation for Bayer around the world. Before joining Bayer in 2020, I also worked as a Molecular Biology Scientist in the discovery platform of a Brazilian company CTC-genomics, leading research in genome editing and trait discovery in sugarcane.

Prior to my industry life, I did my postdoc in the laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Kellogg at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (2016-2018), where I studied the development and genetics of grass inflorescence development using Setaria and corn as models and published several papers, including this most recent one published in Plant Physiology. I have a Ph.D. degree in Plant Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, where I investigated proteins controlling Arabidopsis reproduction with state-of-the-art microscopy to image live cells and molecules in motion. During my PhD, I was sponsored as a Monsanto Company/Dr. Norman Borlaug Corporate Fellow and worked as a Plant Molecular Biologist/Physiologist Intern at Monsanto where I supported the corn Doubled Haploid (DH) projects. I received a BS degree in plant biology and Biotechnology from Tsinghua University, a top university in China.

I am very grateful for the career I am having, driven by my passion for agriculture and curiosity for plant sciences, supported by many advisors/mentors and colleagues, enlightened by the learnings and findings we have each day!
