#PlantBio20 Inclusion
You can make plant science more accessible to disabled people (including disabled LGBTQIA people), by learning to use image descriptions & alt text to make these images accessible. It also increases your reach! https://t.co/9yl0LC1LXN

Really useful slides from the "Allies 101: How to affirm the LGBTQ+ community in the lab and classroom" slide at #PlantBio20. Even if you couldn't attend the workshop, read through the slides for some excellent suggestions and resources. Thanks for sharing @sterling_knox3 https://t.co/ayE3IuD6Gt

This was a great session – I really appreciated the perspectives, dialogue, and suggestions shared by the speakers!#PlantBio20 #ASPBForward #diversity #inclusion #community https://t.co/vJM9G7E3jt

Fantastic and informative workshop from @LGBTQPlantSci this afternoon at #PlantBio20. Look out for the recording (for attendees) and the presentation slides on Plantae (for anyone, I believe). The presentation will be a great resource for grad programs and others going forward!

Thanks for the reminder, @sterling_knox3, that "allyship is an action" at #PlantBio20. Great "Allies 101" workshop! ?️??️??️?

Excellent conversation with the equity, diversity and inclusivity panel! Thanks @BerondaM for some especially thought provoking comments on the motivations for institutional and environmental change. #PlantBio20

Really enjoyed the DEI section paneled by @AColonCarmona @BerondaM @DGusmac and Patrick Thomas at #PlantBio20. Solving the obvious diversity problems in science is definitely a challenge. But we're also some of the best minds in the world. We CAN change this system NOW.

Cannot express enough how grateful I am for this EDI workshop at #PlantBio20. The wisdom of @BerondaM, Patrick Thomas, Adán Colón-Carmona, and Gustavo MacIntosh is insightful and actionable. I'm proud to be part of such a conscious professional society!

Great tip from @BerondaM it is important to add pics of paper authors when including them in a class. If all white go through your own library and see if they're all white and how you can expand the diversity of your personal library#PlantBio20

Patrick Thomas #PlantBio20 EDI Committee workshop: be careful of things you say & do, look around and asses diversity – low numbers of BIPOC inherently makes institutional survival more difficult. Inclusion must be holistic and extend across all levels of the program/university

“We’ve gone to the moon. We’ve made GMOs. We are not deterred by doing hard things in our research.” So why do we shy away from the hard work of making our institutions and environments inclusive and equitable? @BerondaM #PlantBio20 Insight for not only reflection but ACTION

In the wake of George Floyd's death, many made or renewed "espoused commitments" to #DEI, many as a part of #ShutDownSTEM & #ShutDownAcademia. Yet, we need the leaders, resources & #institutionaltransformation to make these "lived commitments" #Plantbio20 https://t.co/zLGHYY5KE3
— Beronda Montgomery ~ #BlackBotanistsWeek (@BerondaM) July 29, 2020
To truly get to equity in #STEM, 2e have to both transform/evolve systems, even while we #lead and #mentor individuals from growth perspectives—not our general deficit or assimilation-based ones—that exist in the current system in the process. #PlantBio20https://t.co/M87T46PLhF
— Beronda Montgomery ~ #BlackBotanistsWeek (@BerondaM) July 29, 2020
Problem with this is it focuses on actions of individuals & not whether the systems & structures are equitable—THEY ARE NOT. So we really need to transform the systems to be #equitable, rather than requiring some to routinely demonstrate more resilience than others. #PlantBio20
— Beronda Montgomery ~ #BlackBotanistsWeek (@BerondaM) July 29, 2020
A thread of my talk in #PlantBio20 Equity Panel:
Too frequently we leave #diversity/#equity/#inclusion (DEI) work to individuals: those with personal agency, enacting personal strategies, programmatic initiatives led by charismatic individuals, or those demonstrating #resilience— Beronda Montgomery ~ #BlackBotanistsWeek (@BerondaM) July 29, 2020
@DGusmac For years the EDI committee has focused on bringing outside diversity in but recently have shifted focus on improving internal efforts. EDIC aims to change the society structure for more URM representation while also creating a culture of inclusion#PlantBio20

Not gonna lie….never would I have thought I would ever give a day's opening speech for a major scientific conference. Guess I can mark that off my bucket list! Looking forward to day 2 at #PlantBio20! (Also, I cringed rewatching this btw) ?? pic.twitter.com/DBsOShJJzS

Thank you @kheyduk for acknowledging how #whitewomen have taken up space in diversity initiatives.
I know it can be uncomfortable for the community to acknowledge and hold space for this, but it’s an important dialogue to be had.
Let’s keep doing the work. #PlantBio20

I am so HYPED for the MAC symposium.
I attended my 1st #PlantBio in my 2nd year of undergrad bc I received an award from the MAC committee. Being exposed to a wide array of research & network of scientists fortified my passion for plant bio. #EDI is SO important. #PlantBio20
— Summer Blanco (@summer_blanco) July 27, 2020
#plantbio20 I love the closed captions and the ability to see the speakers (without masks)!
— Elsebeth (@elsebeth_k) July 27, 2020
time for #PlantBio20! overwhelming well curated choice of symposia and talks – the time difference means I can still get my thesis done and enjoy the conference. not presenting anything but always down for a chat about disability representation in science #ASPBforward
