Brief bio: Attracted by its interdisciplinary nature, I was among the first students of the Bioinformatics program in Munich. Intrigued by the idea of using computational aid to gain biological knowledge from data, I decided to focus on data mining, machine learning and systems biology. A perfect place to broaden and deepen my skills in these areas was the Max Planck Campus in Tuebingen, where Dr. Koji Tsuda (Institute for Biological Cybernetics) and Dr. Gunnar Raetsch (Friedrich Miescher Laboratory) supervised from 2006 to 2009 my PhD project on relational data mining in biological networks and multidimensional arrays. Then I had the great opportunity to work for 3.5 years under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Samuel Kaski at Aalto University in Finland, conducting research on model-based comparison of gene expression data and learning from multiple data sources in cancer medicine. Aiming at applying data science to promote biological discovery, I was fortunate to join in summer 2013 the Institute of Biochemical Plant Pathology at the German Research Center for Environmental Health, where I work with measurement data from various omics levels up to phenotyping of plants, having a particular passion for data integration, complex datasets and data re-use.
